Role: UX designer, UX researcher

Tools: Figma & plugins

Duration: 3 weeks

This design is a part of my Coursera UX certificate program offered by Google and it gave me an opportunity to design a menu app for a food truck called Pesto's.

It was a solo project, I conducted the user research, developed high fidelity wireframes and clickable prototypes to enhance the experience of users.

Pain points of users
  • Unavailability of language friendly and disability friendly food menu apps

  • Better categorisation of food to meet the dietary needs of people

Goal

To make an equitable food truck menu app which is language friendly, disability friendly and serves healthy food.

Process

I started my research by interviewing people and asking them about the problems that they faced when using menu apps. After that I made user stories and user personas to better understand the problems of users and empathize with them. After that I came up with user journey maps for my user personas to understand their pain points and to look at the problems from the perspective of the users and at last I conducted a competitive audit to research my competitors and to make my app stand apart from them. Then I started ideating and used methods like crazy eights and storyboarding to come up with solutions for user's problems.

Then we created wireframes, lo-fi prototypes and conducted usability studies with 5 participants. After that I used an affinity diagram and spreadsheet to synthesize root problems and potential solutions.

User persona

After interviewing a few people, I created user personas and it helped me paint a realistic and clear picture of user's needs, goals and behaviours.

User journey

This is the user journey of Amobi and it gave me a lot ideas which I wouldn't have had otherwise.

Usability study

After coming with the lo-fi prototype I conducted a usability study with 5 participants to see if people are having a smooth experience with our prototype and to gather insights for improving the prototype. The main goal behind it was to check the usability and equity of the prototype.

Takeaways

Impact: Since this is a course project so I didn’t get the opportunity to work with real data but I would just say that there is a shortage of equitable food apps in the market and my app propounds the pain points of the people who are often neglected because of their disabilities or medical challenges.

What I learned: This was my first UX project and it was like a roller coaster journey. Through this project I learned the importance of equity and how as a UX designer its our job to become the voice of these people who are often underrepresented and neglected in the society.

Next steps
  • I am going to keep improving this project and learning about equity based designs in depth.

  • I really want to work on the bot feature of the app because it could be a game changer in the industry and can help people with disabilities to feel included.
